PACS: 32.80.Pj, 03.75.Be, 39.20.+q Abstract: We demonstrate the bi-directional propagation of more than 10 atoms (Rb) around a “stadium” shaped magnetic ring that encloses an area of 10.9 cm, with a flux density exceeding 10 atoms sec cm. Atoms are loaded into the guide from a 2D MOT at one side of the “stadium”. An optical standing wave pulse is applied to increase the propagation velocity of atoms along the waveguide. The atom sample fills the entire ring in 200 ms when counterpropagating atom sections of the original atom cloud recombine at their initial positions after a full revolution. We discuss a possible extension of this result to a guided atom ring interferometer.

Transport of launched cold atoms with a laser guide and pulsed magnetic fields

We propose the novel combination of a laser guide and magnetic lens to transport a cold atomic cloud. We have modelled the loading and guiding of a launched cloud of cold atoms with the optical dipole force. We discuss the optimum strategy for loading typically 30 % of the atoms from a MOT and guiding them vertically through 22 cm. However, although the atoms are tightly confined transversely, ...

Quantum propagation of neutral atoms in a magnetic quadrupole guide

We consider the quantized motion of neutral atoms at very low temperature in a two-dimensional magnetic quadrupole structure formed, for example, by four current-carrying wires along the z direction. The magnetic field B in the guide is proportional to the vector (x ,2y). We show that this field can be used to make a single-mode atomic de Broglie waveguide which has bound states of low angular ...

Propagation of cold atoms along a miniature magnetic guide

A cloud of laser-cooled 85Rb atoms is coupled through a magnetic funnel into a miniature waveguide formed by four current-carrying wires embedded in a silica fiber. The atom cloud has a approximately 100 &mgr;m radius within the fiber and propagates over cm distances. We study the coupling, propagation, and transverse distribution of atoms in the fiber, and find good agreement with theory. This...

Superfluid qubit systems with ring shaped optical lattices

We study an experimentally feasible qubit system employing neutral atomic currents. Our system is based on bosonic cold atoms trapped in ring-shaped optical lattice potentials. The lattice makes the system strictly one dimensional and it provides the infrastructure to realize a tunable ring-ring interaction. Our implementation combines the low decoherence rates of neutral cold atoms systems, ov...

A solenoidal synthetic field and the non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm effects in neutral atoms

Cold neutral atoms provide a versatile and controllable platform for emulating various quantum systems. Despite efforts to develop artificial gauge fields in these systems, realizing a unique ideal-solenoid-shaped magnetic field within the quantum domain in any real-world physical system remains elusive. Here we propose a scheme to generate a "hairline" solenoid with an extremely small size aro...
